Sweden’s Enerpoly Opens World’s First Zinc-Ion Battery Megafactory

Stockholm facility is the world’s first of its kind and is the latest step in Europe’s journey to becoming a zinc-ion powerhouse. The news follows Enerpoly’s recent announcement of full end-to-end battery cell and pack production line capabilities. The facility will house all of Enerpoly’s operations and is expected to operate at full capacity by 2026

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN. 2ND SEPTEMBER 2024Enerpoly, the Stockholm-based zinc-ion battery cell technology innovator, has opened the world’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory, in a landmark step towards a global transition to clean energy, supported by sustainable, affordable, and safe energy storage.

The 6,500m² (70,000ft²) Enerpoly Production Innovation Center (EPIC) facility, located in Rosersberg in northern Stockholm, will achieve final capacity throughput of 100 MWh annually by 2026. Commissioning has already begun and production starts in 2025. The megafactory will facilitate the ongoing co-development of market-ready battery solutions with customers, and enable Enerpoly to conduct large-scale pilots targeting commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

In July 2024, Enerpoly announced the acquisition of state-of-the-art dry electrode manufacturing equipment for its megafactory. The end-to-end battery production line and process development capabilities will allow Enerpoly to accelerate production capabilities; lower costs, waste, and energy consumption; and deliver more sustainable energy storage solutions.

The opening of the Enerpoly megafactory, and its establishing of a 100% European supply chain, highlights Europe’s progress towards becoming the world’s zinc-ion powerhouse, as well as Sweden’s role as a global leader in clean energy innovation. It also lays the foundations for Enerpoly’s future zinc-ion gigafactory production plans.

Enerpoly CEO, Eloisa de Castro comments, "Our new manufacturing facility marks a pivotal moment in our journey toward revolutionizing the energy industry. With EPIC, our focus is firmly on driving sustainable innovation, and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy storage. By scaling up our production, we can deliver first-of-all-kind deployments in partnership with utilities and battery system integrators across Europe and globally.”

Enerpoly: Background

Building on its founding team’s battery chemistry research at Stockholm University, Enerpoly has developed patented battery cell technology to deliver affordable, sustainable and safe zinc-ion batteries. Enerpoly’s zinc-ion batteries are suitable for grid or large-scale storage, backup power, and safety-critical applications of energy storage including for maritime use, critical infrastructure and densely populated urban areas.

To meet COP28 goals of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, energy storage needs to increase six-fold. Enerpoly leverages European equipment and utilises abundant raw materials, including zinc and manganese, to establish a local supply chain and contribute to a more diversified and resilient European energy landscape.
